Casserly & Co was established by Martin Casserly in 1981. At that time Martin Casserly was a qualified Chartered Accountant. He had completed his Articles of Training with Ernst & Young in 1975, and had obtained extensive post qualification experience with a number of medium sized accountancy practices in the Dublin area in the intervening six years.

Being a member of a well known business family in Athlone, at the time it was the obvious strategy to concentrate the development of the practice in the midlands area. This was achieved by providing a holistic approach to client services, providing first class accounting and financial services, combined with expert taxation advice, while at the same time ensuring that the overall objective of growing the client’s business with consequent wealth creation and retention was achieved. Over the years the practice has been mainly involved in advising clients in the SME sector, with particular emphasis on advising start ups by way of expert business planning from embryo to fully functioning business operations. In addition to providing the normal auditing and accounting services associated with a chartered accountant, Martin Casserly also acted as an insolvency practitioner and successfully completed a number of members’ and creditors’ voluntary liquidations.

Galway accountants

Over the years the client base gradually extended into the west of Ireland, and indeed eventually the fee base arising in the west outgrew the midlands. As a result, in order to manage the practice more efficiently, and provide greater connectivity with clients, the Galway office was opened. Given the huge advances in information technology, internet coverage etc., through the early 2000’s it became no longer necessary to maintain the Athlone office and it was closed in 2006. Since then the practice has been managed from 10 Ruxton Court, Dominick Street, Galway.

In 2013 Patrick Donnellan’s practice was incorporated into Casserly & Co., forming the new entity known as Donnellan Casserly & Co. The new practice is headed by Patrick Donnellan A.C.A. with Martin Casserly F.C.A. taking up the position of Senior Practice Consultant.

Patrick has over 10 year’s financial experience having initially received his Honours Bachelor of Business Studies Degree from the University of Limerick. Patrick went on to complete his Articles of Training in Farrell Grant Sparks (FGS) in Dublin for four years. FGS is the largest All-Ireland indigenous accountancy practice with over 30 partners and 100 staff. Working with clients from a broad range of industries and backgrounds this training provided Patrick with an insight into many businesses, large and small. Patrick placed first in the Institute of Chartered Accountants exams three years in a row within FGS.

Upon completion of this four year training apprenticeship Patrick joined Boundary Capital, a private equity and corporate finance firm. Here Patrick worked on investment projects in a range of industries with significant experience gained working with Bank’s where substantial levels of debt were held on individual investments.

Patrick then moved back to Galway in 2008 to work as a Financial Analyst with Medtronic Corporation. In this role Patrick learned skills in analysing a business’ performance in terms of efficiencies, cost reductions and maximising the resources of a business. These skills have been utilised in providing Management Consultancy services to many clients where a business wishes to streamline their operation and maximise its resources.

In 2011 Patrick then joined AIB plc Commercial Banking as a Senior Credit Analyst. In this role Patrick had sole discretion to decision credit applications from SME customers throughout Ireland. Credit decisions included new money requests for business expansion and restructuring of existing debt into manageable structures. Patrick also worked on many cases where individuals and businesses were unlikely to ever meet their outstanding debt commitments and established strategies for dealing with these scenarios. Patrick’s extensive experience within this role provides clients the unique position of availing of an advisor with inside knowledge of how Bank’s operate and what solutions will put the client in the best position possible to move forward.
